Take time to smell the flowers
It may sound cliche, but this phrase put a stamp in my mom’s life at an early age and has helped make many decisions of how she has lived her life. She talked with me last night about my life and used this analogy. She said:
You are living life like you are on a bullet train full steam ahead. You can’t look outside or around you to see the beautiful landscapes and scenery because all the shades are pulled down around you. The only thing that is on your mind is the destination. ..meanwhile you are missing the journey.
She’s right. I haven’t taken time to “smell the roses” as she put it. Too wrapped up in the destination…ending my school career, getting a real job, moving out of my parents house, starting my own family, the list goes on. Meanwhile, I am missing all the relationships, all the opportunities, the journey and beautiful scenery in life because I am too focused on the future and forget to live in the present.
I am trying to find contentment without becoming complacent. I want to be able to say what Paul did when he was talking to the Phillipians:
I have learned to be content whatever the circumstance. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.
